ILC turns 9

The Interactive Learning Center (ILC) of the University of the Philippines Los Baños celebrated its ninth anniversary last January 26, 2014. The celebration was highlighted by the development and production of two learning objects (LOs) on Chemistry entitled Hydrogen Bonding and Chemical Equilibrium uploaded in the ILC website in January and February, respectively. The two LOs were authored by Prof. Ma. Desiree B. Aldemita while the second is co-authored by Prof. Joseph Carmelo K. San Pascual from the Institute of Chemistry, College of Arts and Sciences, UP Los Baños.

For the past eight years, ILC has been producing interactive learning materials such as LOs and podcasts/vodcasts, among others. Six LOs were already uploaded in the ILC website for easy access and use of UPLB students, particularly those enrolled in general education/foundation courses. In 2013, ILC produced three more LOs on Chemistry and Economics. The two LOs on Chemistry are Van der Waals authored by Dr. Mary Ann O. Torio and Peptide Sequencing by Profs. Ma. Desiree B. Aldemita and Joseph Carmelo K. San Pascual. On the other hand, Prof. Ma. Angeles O. Catelo from the Department of Economics, College of Economics and Management authored the LO on Marginal Utility. To date, 11 LOs are now available for easy access among faculty and students as supplemental learning materials for various topics on Chemistry, Economics and Physics courses.

ILC also held training-workshops on creating alternative tools for teaching and learning, MOODLE (Modular Object Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment), innovative teaching strategies, scriptwriting, Audacity/GIMP, and Moviemaker to help develop faculty expertise on the production and packaging of interactive learning materials. Last year, it also offered training workshops on the development/application of interactive learning materials.

The center actively offers online and offline computer access of students to lecture materials of various general education/foundation courses. In March 2013, an ILC Hub (with 9 computers) was established at the UPLB Main Library to cater to students even beyond office hours, weekends and whenever the library is open. ILC also provided use of its computer laboratories for hands-on computer exercises of different courses and support to administrative activities, among others.

As ILC enters its tenth year, the center will continuously strive for excellence in performing its duly-approved projects and activities, upgrade its equipment, development and production of more interactive learning materials, and establishment of more interactive learning hubs in the libraries and major academic buildings of the university.
